On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, HOT ROD magazine heads to Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs for the 90th running of the world's most famous mountain race; the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), also known as The Race to the Clouds, is an annual automobile and motorcycle hillclimb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. The track measures 12.42 miles (19.99 km) over 156 turns, climbing 4,720 ft (1,440 m) from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway, to the finish at 14,110 ft (4,300 m), on grades averaging 7%.[1] It used to consist of both gravel and paved sections, however as of August 2011, the highway is fully paved and as a result all subsequent runnings will be on tarmac from start to finish.

We follow Jess Neal and Morgan Combes as they attempt to make it to the top of the treacherous 12.5 mile course in a 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda.

Burnout Fest! 2013 Shelby GT500 and 2012 Camaro ZL1 Road Trip - HOT ROD ...

On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan hit the road in the hottest new muscle cars, the 2013 Shelby GT500 and the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. This isn't a serious performance comparison, but a look at how two muscle car guys view the pros and cons of each car while thrashing them on the street and strip like you might if you really owned 'em. But you probably wouldn't do as many burnouts and donuts as these guys, because you'd be replacing tires every week. Watch this and make the call: which car would YOU buy?

My Classic Car Season 16 (2012) Episode 7 + Slamology coverage

On this episode of My Classic Car, Dennis travels to Indianapolis, IN for Slamology. Plus, he'll learn about new technology in battery maintenance.

This was the fifth time I’ve been to Slamology, and I was excited to hear it changed venues. From the Marion County Fairgrounds to the Lucas Oil Speedway in Indianapolis, IN, it brought back some awesome Indy Truck Bash memories. It was situated on the circle track which was different than ITB, and there was a diesel event going on at the dragstrip, but just being there gave the show a different feel. I liked the spot a lot better!

Monster Miata! - The Downshift Episode 27

On this episode of The Downshift, we visit Monster Miata where Martin Wilson and his team are dropping Ford 5.0-liter V-8 engines into MX-5 convertibles to create wild performance monsters.

The Downshift appears every Tuesday on the new Motor Trend channel.
http://www.youtube.com/motortrend

The Mazda Miata lends itself quite nicely to the torture of a torque monster V8 transplant. The overall structure of the car is more than strong enough to handle the wrenching stress of 400 ft.lbs. From "clutch dumping" to auto crossing and track events, my personal V8 Miata sees unrelenting abuse. Driving 400 miles to Laguna Seca Raceway to flog my car around the track for two days and feeling confident the car will hold together and get me back home, speaks well for the conversion.

2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 vs. Mark Stielow's Red Devil '69 Camaro

On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, David Freiburger meets up with Pro Touring legend Mark Stielow to compare old and new Camaros head to head.

Mark Stielow is a GM engineer with a long history of building vintage, street-worthy Camaros with amazing handling prowess. His latest is the Red Devil, a '69 model powered by a 427ci, supercharged LS9 that tops 750 hp and 800 lb-ft.

In fact, Stielow essentially invented the "Pro-Touring" movement (and the name) over a decade ago with early 1st Gen Camaro projects like "The Mule" and "Red Witch." Common denominators between Mark's recent builds include LS engines, sophisticated chassis development, understated euro-style body mods and Red Line Oil and lubricants.

Muscle cars: A father-son tradition

Picture: theosakisreview.com
Austen Moser and his father, Myron Moser, both loved cars long before either of them could drive. This love has brought them to numerous car shows, including Roddin’ Round the Lake in Osakis. It has also endowed them with a 1954 GMC 100 pickup truck, a 1979 Cadillac Sedan deVille and two Mustangs, which will be shown at this year’s Roddin’ Round the Lake show on Saturday, July 14.

The Mosers’ passion for car shows started long before attending Roddin’ Round the Lake.
Myron has been taking Austen to the “Back to the ‘50s” car show in St. Paul since Austen was 4 years old.

“At a very early age, Austen showed that he had mechanical talent and interest, and he loved old cars, trucks and tractors,” said Myron.

Eventually, simply seeing cars wasn’t enough to satiate this hunger for muscle cars.

With the help of Austen’s uncle, Terry Seter, Myron tracked down and purchased Austen’s dream car: A 1969 Mustang Mach 1.

Every now and again we come across something of such creative genius that we just cannot get enough of it. In this example, the folks at The Theory have taken a pocket projector and fed it video of various movements of a police chase and projected that chase throughout a room.

Not All Horsepower Addicts Are Men

Tamara Wong with Mustang, Photo: aol

Whoever said that only men have the need for speed?

Not Tracey Richardson of Lexington, Kentucky, who drives a 2010 Corvette Grand Sport with a 6.2-liter V8 engine that rides herd over 430 ponies. And not Tamara Wong of Dublin, California, who gets her motoring kicks behind the wheel of a 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8, which is powered by a 6.1-liter V8 that delivers 425 horsepower.

It’s true that the majority of muscle-car owners are men, but Richardson and Wong are only two of the many women in America who are out there tearing up the road in their Corvettes, Chargers, Mustangs, and Camaros – not to mention luxury speed demons like Porsche 911s and AMG Mercedes models. Indeed, this is a very big country, one that includes millions of horsepower freaks. So even though females may be in the minority in this category, there are still a lot of them putting the pedal to the muscle-car metal.

TopSpeed Rendering: 2015 Ford Mustang

2015 Ford Mustang, Picture: TopSpeed.com
It has been rumored for quite some time now that the future generation Ford Mustang will drop its usual retro look and will adopt an exterior design that is "more technical, more modern" and inspired by the Ford Evos concept unveiled last fall at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. This decision was made in order to transform the muscle car into a model fit to go global.

The future model will still look like a Mustang and will keep its familiar shark-nosed grille and round headlights, but it will be the "most European-friendly version of the coupe ever."

A few changes will also be made under the hood. While the 2015 Mustang will keep its usual rear-wheel-drive configuration, it is expected to also get an independent rear suspension. The top version will keep the usual V8 engines, but the base models will get a twin-turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that will deliver about 300 HP.

The sixth generation Ford Mustang will be unveiled in 2014 in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mustang line.

My Torino GT is all original Body and numbers matching. I have done extensive work on engine with new comp cam and rings.valves.lifters etc. I had Hooker headers put on last fall before putting it away for the winter. Very kool sounding ride and very fast.It is the M code with the 351 4V Cleveland engine. It was brought up to Canada from Texas in 2003 in which I purchased it. It has been to many shows and cruises and has gotten alot of recognition around my area. To date it has won 7 trophies and numerous other awards...Gotta luv it.

2012 COPO Camaro: GM's Baddest Factory Camaro Ever!

It's the baddest factory Camaro ever! The 2012 COPO Camaro is a pure drag racing car built to compete in NHRA Stock Eliminator and Super Stock classes, and in this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, we go behind the scenes within General Motors to learn about the car, watch some radical burnouts, meet some of the people behind the COPO, see one of the engines on the dyno, and visit the Performance Build Center where the engines are assembled. At the time of our visit, the only COPO was the very first one, known as the Proof of Concept car, serial number 001. GM was not ready to release engine power numbers, drag times, or vehicle weights, as class details are still being worked out with the National Hot Rod Association.

There's still a strong demand for muscle cars

Picture: Ridelust.com
Carroll Shelby has never shied away from a challenge – especially one he’s set for himself. And ever since teaming up with one-time Ford President Lee Iacocca back in the mid-1960s, Shelby continually has found ways to pump more power out of the back wheels of a Mustang.

His latest effort, on display at the NY Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, is the Shelby 1000, which makes a cool 950 horsepower on the street, 1,100 hp in the track edition.

Shelby isn’t alone. The halls of the Javits Center are filled with an array of high-performance models, including the new Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG, at 621 hp, and the 593 hp McLaren MP4-12C. Barely two decades ago, a top-line performer such as the Porsche 911 could barely squeeze out 200 ponies. Today, there are more than 70 models making at least 500, and a baker’s dozen top 600 hp.

Stavos Grillis Is A 9-Year Old Stud Drifter

Most nine-year olds are happy with their toys, video games, or iPads. But for the select few young ones that prefer something that’s reserved for somebody much older, they can take a cue from 9-year old Stavros Grillis.

Despite not yet hitting 10 years of age, Stavros Grillis is already an adept drifter. You read that right, folks. The kid has not only taken mastery of actually driving a car - let alone one with a stick shift on it - but he can also drift the wheels out of ’em.

Dodge Challenger SRT8 Limo: Luxury Meets Muscle

Between proms, parties, guys’/girls’ nights out, and other things, we have been in a lot of limos in our day. We have also seen plenty of them in our time in all shapes, sizes, makes, and models. However, we have never ever seen a muscle car stretched into a luxury limo. This all changed when we came across LA Custom Coach Inc., who is famous for stretching unusual vehicles into limos. The oddest limo on their lot, which includes a stretched F-650 and a stretched Charger, is a roughly 28-foot-long Challenger SRT8.

According to the video above, the entire stretching process took a total of four months from start to finish. It involved chopping this poor car in half, modifying its frame, then adding sheet metal and windows. On the inside, LA Custom Coach Inc. completely gutted the SRT8 and added in full black leather with slight touches of red, which are actually the signature SRT dual slashes.

Looking far more polished, high-tech, and supercar-like than anything that's previously worn the Viper badge, this image piques our curiosity more than either of the previous images, or the Hot Wheels toy shots. Here we have the makings of a true American supercar--not just in performance, but in design, fit, and finish. Something to take to the Italians, Germans, and anyone else.

You Could Be Dodge Material – 1970 Dodge Charger 500 Commercial

Advertising has changed a lot over the years, but it doesn’t even feel like too long ago that this commercial for the 1970 Dodge Charger 500 was airing on the networks. Nowadays, though, a spot like this ends up being more hilarious than most of the ads that are intentionally funny.
In this spot, you can see for yourself just how attractive the 1970 Dodge Charger really was. So much so that it could change your whole image, therefore causing you to leave your lady stranded on the beach.
The fact of the matter remains true, though, that getting behind the wheel of a Dodge can inspire a confidence that can even transform awkward wimps like Elliot into men of steel.
So, are YOU Dodge material?

It’s almost that time of year again. In one month, flowers will be blooming, birds chirping, and… HEMIs roaring?

As the 7th Annual Spring Festival of LXs (“Spring Fest”, colloquially) approaches, the highways of North America will be graced with caravans of Dodge Challengers, Chargers, Magnums, and Chrysler 300s. It’s like Christmastime for the LX community, and though March 24th is the big day, associated events will fill the entire weekend leading up to this year’s event at the Orange County Great Park. Southern California is expected to see upwards of 1000 LX vehicles as owners from as far away as Sweden gear up for the largest gathering of its kind in the world.

A Ride In A Dodge Charger Pursuit With Steve Guttenberg

Steve Guttenberg may not be a real cop, but that didn’t stop Police Academy’s Officer Mahoney from patrolling the mean streets of N.Y.C. in Dodge’s badass new high-tech cop car.

Photographed for Maxim by Clare Thigpen | Licensed to Alpha Media Group 2012

“My dad was a cop,” Steve Guttenberg says as he zips through Manhattan with Maximeditors Patrick Carone and Seth Porges in a Dodge Charger Pursuit—a souped-up cop car that will soon be used by officers nationwide. “Now where’s the siren?” The Police Academy icon looks down at a control panel filled with a dozen or so buttons and pushes one, causing a wail that serves to instantly clear up any confusion about the legality of our operation. “You wanna call your lawyers now or wait till we get to the station?”

Video: 1969 Pontiac GTO: Superbad!

Roger Poirier's 1969 Pontiac GTO is a car that has lived in Roger's family for a long time... several decades, in fact. Today, this super-clean GTO is sporting a fresh restoration and Pro-Touring conversion with upgraded suspension parts, a hot Pontiac V8, and amazing black paint. The interior is red, the wheels are chrome, it all adds up to a car that lacks nothing in execution or style.

1978 Special Edition "Bandit" Trans Am

Photo: Allmusclecars.com

I purchased my Special Edition "Bandit" Trans Am in May of '06 by being in the right place at the right time. I was getting ready to head out to Boise, Idaho for my niece's First Communion on a Thursday morning and just before turning in for the night, I thought I would see what was new on eBay. Well how about that, a '78 Black Special Edition appeared. After I read through the info on the car, and looked at the pictures, I scrolled back to the top only to find that the car was, you guessed it, in BOISE. Well, I sent the seller my cell number and asked him to call me the next day when I arrived in Boise. Well, long story short, I saw the car, drove it, looked at the paperwork, and yep, bought it right off the lot.

"Bullitt" Chase in 2011: Music video for a Grammy winning artist

When was the last time the Black Charger was chased through the streets of San Francisco by the Green Bullitt Mustang? I mean, really chased, in real life, not on the movie screen or on a DVD. You would all have to say it was in 1968 when the cult classic movie "Bullitt" was being filmed. Not so! It happened on Tuesday, February 22, 2011, on a bright and sunny San Francisco day. I kid you, not. We were there!

The video posted here is the raw video taken with my my mini HD hand cam. Hopefully we will be getting the professional video soon! When I do keep your eyes open. I will be posting more footage here!

Lee 1: "The most famous television car in the world"

Photo: Autoblog.com
What's "the most famous television car in the world"? We suppose that depends on who you ask, but to many, nothing but the General Lee could possibly hold the title.

Of course, there wasn't just one General Lee. In fact, scores of orange Dodge Chargers were filmed for "The Dukes of Hazzard," and most of them never survived their first televised escapade.

Not so Lee 1, so named because it was the car that famously jumped over a Hazzard County police cruiser in the very first episode of the hit series. If you've ever seen the opening credits, you know the car we're talking about... it flew 16 feet in the air over a distance of 82 feet. And, as you may have guessed, it didn't exactly stick the landing.

1969 Dodge Charger: The Classic American Icon

The Dodge Charger was manufactured by Chrysler and since its launch, it has captured the hearts of many, especially young petrolheads. It featured 461 horsepower and had a V8 engine, which promised a top speed performance. Although a V6 engine was made for the Dodge Charger, it was never quite as popular as the more powerful engine..

The 1969 Dodge Charger is one of the most famous muscle cars of all time. It goes without saying that most people consider this vehicle to be a classic. Although the 1969 Charger was similar in many ways to those of the past, there were some changes that gave it a distinct look and feel.

Development

The Charger was created to compete with other cars like the Pontiac GTO, Buick Gran Sport and the Oldsmobile 442. The vehicle would quickly gain popularity, and each subsequent year was made more powerful. The'69 Charger was just about entirely overhauled as the company wanted a new image for the car.
The line-up of the 1969 Dodge Charger introduced a wide variety of models including the more magnificent Special Edition 'SE', the base model, the 2 racing editions (the 500 and Daytona) and the R/T.

Popular

So, what made the 69 Charger so popular?
In 1969 the car was popularized by its performance in NASCAR racing.
When the car was featured in the popular television series, The Dukes of Hazzard, the Charger really took off.
If it were not for The Dukes of Hazzard it is safe to say that the 1969 Dodge Charger rt may have never gained so much popularity.

Pioneers

Many people do not know that just these cars set the base for the todays cars. Their engines, their designes were to that time something exceptional. They were and still they are cars which remain in hearts of those who pay honours and admire them. This article will be a nice revival and memory for them.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette: First Prototype Caught Testing in Canada

Photo: insideline
Just the Facts:
  • This is the first time a prototype of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette has been caught on camera.
  • The final production version is expected to debut at the Detroit auto show in 2013.
  • The Corvette will retain its traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and feature a small-block V8.

KAPUSKASING, Ontario — Spy photographers have caught a glimpse of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette undergoing cold-weather testing in Canada. It's the first time that the seventh-generation Corvette has been spotted in public.

You don't have to be born in the 1960s or 1970s to be able to recognize the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard and the Pontiac Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit. These old school four-wheeled stars seem to transcend demographics thanks to the miles of film that show the orange 1969 Dodge Charger and the jet-black 1977 Pontiac Trans Am performing seemingly impossible stunts.

The folks at Hot Rod magazine are obviously hip to this fact, and they put together a fun video in tribute of the instantly recognizable duo. Hit play to watch on as Sam Young and James Smith replace Bo Duke and The Bandit for a bit of dirt-road shenanigans in a pair of otherwise well cared for classics. We're not so sure we'd call it the best chase scene ever, but it sure looks like a lot of fun.
