“My dad was a cop,” Steve Guttenberg says as he zips through Manhattan with Maximeditors Patrick Carone and Seth Porges in a Dodge Charger Pursuit—a souped-up cop car that will soon be used by officers nationwide. “Now where’s the siren?” The Police Academy icon looks down at a control panel filled with a dozen or so buttons and pushes one, causing a wail that serves to instantly clear up any confusion about the legality of our operation. “You wanna call your lawyers now or wait till we get to the station?”

With an upcoming book (The Guttenberg Bible: A Memoir), a role in a hilarious Broadway play (Relatively Speaking), anda new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Goot’s got lots to chat about. It seems, however, he’d rather just drive. “This thing has crazy power,” he says. “It’d take you down in a second.”

Eventually, we pull up to our destination (a donut shop, of course), where we run into a gaggle of real NYPD. We butter them up with some free donuts, and rather than arrest us for impersonating cops, they just ogle the car and shake their hero’s hand. “We love Mahoney!” one exclaims. Steve spills that he’s got plans for new Police Academy andThree Men movies, but before we get the facts, he’s back in the driver’s seat. “Let’s roll!”
