Monster Miata! - The Downshift Episode 27

On this episode of The Downshift, we visit Monster Miata where Martin Wilson and his team are dropping Ford 5.0-liter V-8 engines into MX-5 convertibles to create wild performance monsters.

The Downshift appears every Tuesday on the new Motor Trend channel.

The Mazda Miata lends itself quite nicely to the torture of a torque monster V8 transplant. The overall structure of the car is more than strong enough to handle the wrenching stress of 400 ft.lbs. From "clutch dumping" to auto crossing and track events, my personal V8 Miata sees unrelenting abuse. Driving 400 miles to Laguna Seca Raceway to flog my car around the track for two days and feeling confident the car will hold together and get me back home, speaks well for the conversion.

I have converted 100+ Monster Miatas in the past 20 years. It is a passion of mine. Having spoken to many gearheads, the consensus is there needs to be a straight-forward way for the average person with a toolbox to do a V8 conversion themselves. I'm now proud to say we have achieved this and produced the "easy to understand" V8 conversion kit.

The instruction manual and detailed photos show you the way from start to finish. The majority of the conversion parts simply bolt on. And though welding is required in a few areas, if you do not have welding capabilities, your local exhaust shop can easily handle these for you. The most difficult part of the entire conversion is convincing yourself to tear into a perfectly good Miata.
