DES PLAINES, Illinois — The most-stolen Ford Mustang of all time is the year 2000 model — not the classic pony car or the old Boss 302s, according to a new report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

The private agency that tracks losses for the insurance industry said it reviewed Mustang theft data from 1964-2011 and identified 611,093 theft records. It said it identified 7,085 thefts of the 2000 Mustang, followed by 6,790 thefts of the 1995 Mustang and 5,394 thefts of the 1998 Mustang.

It did not offer an explanation of why the 2000 Mustang seems so compelling to criminals. But it did note that there's an emotional component to having a Mustang stolen.

"Aside from the hassle of losing their transportation and all that entails, a Mustang loss can be overwhelming given that many owners form an emotional bond with their machines," said the National Insurance Crime Bureau in a statement on Tuesday.

None of the classic 1960s or 1970s Mustangs made the top 10 list of the most stolen Mustangs.

"Although data for all years is available, confidence in pre-1981 records is low due to the inconsistency in reporting protocols and vehicle identification number systems in use prior to 1981," said the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

The most thefts of Mustangs occurred in 1981 when 20,708 were stolen and the fewest in 2011, when 4,347 were stolen.

The NICB said it will periodically release a special report called Hot Wheels Classics focusing on a specific class or vehicle or make and model. The Mustang is the first of such reports.
